Danes have more four-legged friends than ever before with cats and dogs being the most popular pet choices. Pets are an important part of a family and for most Danes seen as a good way to develop empathy and the ability to make connections.
To bring along a pet to Denmark, it is necessary to contact a veterinarian at home before departure to meet all requirements regarding import of pets into Denmark.
EU countries
Dogs and cats from EU countries plus Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and the Vatican City State may enter Denmark without notification as long as the following is fulfilled:
- The owner/the pet responsible must accompany the pet during the transport
- The pet must have either a microchip or a tattoo in order to identify the animal
- The pet must have an EU pet passport issued by a veterinarian that states that the vaccine against rabies
Non EU countries
Please see the import requirements and detailed information about vaccines and addresses on the website of The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. By answering a few questions, a detailed process description and links to documents will be provided.
Dog and cats from non EU countries may only enter Denmark through the Border Inspection Post at Copenhagen Airport and Billund Airport. At the Border Inspection Post document and identity checks are carried out. At least 24 hours prior to arrival, the Border Inspection Post must be notified of the import. Should point of entry be another EU country, document and identity checks will be done in that EU country.
